EMBRACING YOUR OLD SELF

SHOW NOTES

EMBRACING YOUR OLD SELF

Jessica Lynn Williams

I'm certainly young, but I've tried on my fair share of hats growing up. I spent my weekdays and weekends in my first years in college frequenting a goth coffee shop complete with weekly slam poetry sessions and clove cigarettes. I've worked with dozens of highly acclaimed artists in prestigious galleries in Los Angeles. I've spent holiday weekends dipping increasingly lukewarm pineapples in dark chocolate at a store that rhymes with Edible Arrangements. I've been the girl barefoot and hair knotty running through the Hawaiian jungle jumping off of waterfalls into pools of fresh rainwater. I've been the pompous asshole who posts politically charged articles online with a lack of self-awareness. I'm not trying to say I've done it all, but I've been a few people over the years.

That's what life is about though, no? Trying on different costumes, seeing how they fit. We try on different personas as a means to understand what it's like to experience our true selves. We mimic our heroes and become the antithesis of our villains. And, while the pendulum always inherently swings from one extreme side to another, to strive to live a well-curated life means swinging to and fro while we get glimpses of the blindspots we had when we were in the gung-ho phases of whatever interest or cause we were passionate about in the past.

In this episode, Melissa and I talk about the people we decide to become on a daily basis. We talk about embracing the traits that we've allowed to fall away, and the ones we've decided serve a function in how we navigate life. Listen in this week as we talk about what falls away and what sticks, how we can be more intentional about who we see ourselves as in the past, and more conscientious of who we set ourselves up to become in the future.
